A part of these murals is on permanent exhibit at this museum.Violent crime, including homicides, is common in Guatemala. And because the site in Petén is not open to the public in general. Not just jade, but made from very different materials that you couldn't tell whether they are contemporary or pre-Columbian jewellery for their outstanding sense of beauty and techniques in this field.Īnother small, but interesting and worth seen part of the museum is its new small sampler from San Bartolo site, one of the few places in Guatemala with Mayan murals recently found of beautiful art work. Since they periodically change the exhibit, if you are lucky enough on the day of your visit, you will see best of the best in Mayan jewellery. Maybe the best part is the Mayan jewellery exhibit that few know about it but has outstanding pieces rival to no other culture of the epoch. The museum has so many beautiful pieces not just archaeological, but real masterpieces of stone carved objects, like the Mayan throne from Piedras Negras a real master piece of the classic Mayan period. Another problem is that the building is under protection by the government so estructural changes are basically forbidden or under strict control and many restrictions. Part of the problem is that they have so many pieces to exhibit and the allocation is relatively small to show all they have at the same time. The museum could open on August, September or October according to the Museum informant. The reopening is expected for October 2023, but no certainty.
